Wharton Impact Research & Evaluation Database
A first-of-its-kind database on impact investing private equity and venture capital.
It’s difficult enough investing to maximize profits, so what happens when you introduce another objective like improving educational outcomes or air quality? Can you really make money and achieve a positive social or environmental impact?
To answer these questions, we collaborated with faculty from Wharton and beyond to build WIRED—the world’s most comprehensive database on impact investing private equity and venture capital.
WIRED allows for multiple levels of analysis and contains data found in quarterly and annual financial reports, private placement memoranda, legal documents between investors and funds, and legal documents between funds and portfolio companies. WIRED also houses survey data that explores other dynamics of the field, including how impact investors think about and measure impact.
“By analyzing these funds, I learned a great deal about the wide potential for social impact across industries. From mattress recycling firms to dementia care services, there really is no limit to the ways in which businesses can contribute positively to society.”
–Robert Harrison, W’18, Spring 2018 WIRED Fellow
Since 2014, more than thirty Penn undergraduates, Wharton MBAs, and Penn Law students completed selective research fellowships working on WIRED.
Helping grow the evidence-base for impact investing, Fellows have the opportunity to work with WIRED data—an exclusive opportunity to see how impact funds operate and perform. Fellows learn about impact investing, build community, and strengthen skills like data analytics and financial modeling.
