Welcome, undergrads! Whether you’re a freshman arriving on campus for the first time, or a seasoned upperclassman making moves, there are so many exciting opportunities ahead at Penn.
More and more, we see incoming students arrive on campus inspired to create change in the world and in their careers, and hungry for the knowledge and specialized skills to make it happen.
After seven years of growth and innovation at Wharton Social Impact Initiative, we understand the passion that fuels today’s students. And we’re taking an approach to social impact that’s distinctly Wharton.
Our focus: building the evidence base for social impact with industry-shaping research, and growing the talent pipeline for future—and current—social impact leaders through training and outreach.
That means plenty of opportunities for you to get inspired, conduct research, and take advantage of hands-on training, events, mentorship, and more.
Here are five ways Penn and Wharton undergrads can get involved right now:
Enhance your major with courses that include social impact content—from social entrepreneurship to corporate social responsibility. Did you know there’s even a Social Impact and Responsibility concentration, with a dedicated social impact advisor? Read some previous course suggestions from students and browse a list of 25+ sample courses.
In addition to business fraternities and sponsored student organizations, Wharton has more than 40 independent undergraduate student clubs! That includes social impact-focused groups like the Penn Social Entrepreneurship Movement (PennSEM), Social Impact Consulting Group, Penn Microfinance Club, Penn International Impact Consulting, and more.

Meet the Social Impact Advisory Board
The Social Impact Undergraduate Advisory Board (SIAB) is a student group that coordinates activities and opportunities for undergrads, and supports the undergraduate social impact community through events, social activities, and other ways to connect—and they are seeking new members.
Join the Social Impact Fellowship
Our Social Impact Fellowship engages undergraduate and graduate students across Wharton and Penn in research, consulting, and strategy projects throughout the academic year and in the summer. This exciting program is a hands-on start in the world of social impact.
Through the Fellowship, students apply and strengthen their strategic, operational, and leadership skills in relevant projects while gaining real-world experience. Browse current openings and apply.
Apply to Turner Social Impact Society
For upperclassmen already committed to social impact, consider applying to the Turner Social Impact Society. TSIS is a select community of undergraduates that are passionate about – and prioritize – social impact in their years at Penn, and beyond. Through the society, we support and develop students’ commitment to social impact through fellowship, funding, mentoring, events and customized opportunities to grow. Learn more and apply.
