Meet the Team
Katherine Klein, Vice Dean
Katherine Klein is the Vice Dean for the Wharton Social Impact Initiative. In this position, Klein shapes WSII’s vision and strategy for social impact projects, partnerships, initiatives and faculty engagement at Wharton.
Klein is the Edward H. Bowman Professor of Management at Wharton. She teaches on leadership, social impact, and research methods. Her courses include MGMT 893, a Global Modular Course titled “Conflict, Leadership, and Change: Lessons from Rwanda”; the pilot executive MBA course “Social Impact Knowledge for Action”; and a doctoral seminar on research methods in management.
She is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the Association for Psychological Science. Her research explores Leadership, Diversity, Teams and Social Networks; Levels of Analysis Issues in Organizational Theory and Research; Innovation and Technology Implementation; Employee Ownership: ESOPs and Employee Stock Options; among other topics.
Her research appears in numerous top journals including Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Review.
Professor Klein received her B.A. in Psychology from Yale University and her Ph.D. in Community Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.
Sherryl Kuhlman, Managing Director
Sherryl leads the Wharton Social Impact Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Drawing on “business strategies for a better world,” Sherryl is strengthening the impact investing ecosystem, with a specific focus on impact assessment and innovative finance.
Kuhlman approaches her role with a blend of nonprofit and academic experience, informed by more than 10 years of involvement in social impact management, partnership development, outcomes measurement and strategy. She joined the Wharton Social Impact Initiative in October 2010, and has a Ph.D, in Ethics and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School.
Sandra Maro Hunt, Senior Director, Social Impact
Sandi Maro Hunt, MSOD ’18, is a Senior Director at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative, where she leads WSII’s gender lens investing activities and oversees the initiative’s operations and strategic planning. Sandi is also a co-host on “Dollars & Change” on SiriusXM111 – Business Radio powered by the Wharton School. Sandi has launched the Turner Social Impact Society and the Penn Social Impact Consortium, interdisciplinary groups aimed at building and supporting diverse communities across Penn who are dedicated to social impact.
As a former consultant at Accenture and Vice President of Operations at Back on My Feet, Sandi brings skills and experiences from both the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Sandi graduated with honors with a BSBA in business management from Bucknell University, and she is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics at the Universtiy of Pennsylvania.
Nick Ashburn, Senior Director, Impact Investing
Nick Ashburn is the Senior Director for Impact Investing at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative, where previously he was also the Director of Special Projects for Impact Investing. He has been a Lecturer in the School of Social Policy and Practice at Penn and has taught Social Entrepreneurship at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas-Austin.
Nick has worked on projects with major foundations, government agencies, large financial institutions, and corporations on diverse projects ranging from innovative finance for social impact, design thinking for poverty alleviation, and education in developing countries. He holds a master’s degree in international educational development from the University of Pennsylvania and is also fluent in German.
Nick is a co-author of “Great Expectations: Financial Performance & Mission Preservation in Impact Investing” and also co-hosts “Dollars & Change” on SiriusXM Channel 111 – Business Radio powered by the Wharton School – a show dedicated to the intersection of business and finance for social impact.
Harry Douglas, Director, Impact Investing Research
Harry Douglas is the Director of Impact Investing Research at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative. He oversees research strategy and manages day-to-day creation of the Wharton Impact Research & Evaluation Database, a data asset that will inform academic scholarship and fill critical knowledge gaps for investors as they assess risk and develop investment strategies in impact investing.
He is co-author of the 2015 WSII report, “Great Expectations: Mission Preservation and Financial Performance in Impact Investing”. He received an MPA from the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California and a BA from Harvard. He is currently a Level II candidate in the CFA program.
Yuri Seung, Program Manager
In her role as Program Manager at WSII, Yuri manages existing student programs, and develops new opportunities for engagement with students and alumni.
Before coming to WSII, Yuri had the privilege of working in city government, philanthropy, and higher education. She’s served on teams implementing innovative solutions to increase access to education and technology, and improve the system of workforce development.
Yuri graduated with honors from Temple University, with a BA in English and Asian Studies. As an undergraduate, she studied in Tokyo, Japan, researching issues affecting women and minorities. She also studied Chinese at Middlebury Language Schools.
S. Tyler Hoffman, Team Coordinator
As Team Coordinator, Tyler Hoffman brings a high level of customer service, creativity, and resourcefulness to facilitates the administration and execution of WSII projects, events, fellowships, and speakers.
His expertise and dedication in this position earned him Penn’s Pillars of Excellence award in 2016.
After receiving his BA from West Chester University, Tyler served as Theater Director and coordinator for a K-12 training program in the Greater Philadelphia Area and New Jersey. He also helped to found a Philadelphia based theatre company and is a previous Actors Equity Association candidate. He brings this varied experience to help grow an increasing number of WSII activities.
